From June 28–29, 2026, Lagos State and its residents witnessed a major flooding event across several communities in the city. From the usual flood-prone areas like the Lekki-Epe Expressway and Obalende, to Apogbon, Mushin, Agege, Bariga, Gbagada, and many others — the floods caused a major disruption to the movement of people and goods. The situation was so severe that floodwaters forced the temporary closure of a terminal at Murtala Muhammed International Airport.
This was not just another rainy season inconvenience. Major road networks, residential areas, vehicles, businesses, and commercial establishments were all compromised, reigniting the conversation about whether Lagos — one of Africa’s megacities — is adequately equipped to protect its people.For Lagosians, water taking over roads during rainfall is nothing new. So why has this event become breaking news? The answer is simple: areas that never used to flood have now been compromised. The cause? A perfect storm of converging failures.
Flooding in Lagos is not the result of any single factor but a convergence of multiple overlapping failures. The most common include poor drainage infrastructure, citizen indiscipline in waste disposal, and the accelerating effects of climate change.
Much of the city’s existing drainage network was designed decades ago for a far smaller population and simply cannot handle the volume Lagos now generates. The city’s rapid population growth, combined with a mass increase in waste generation and inadequate waste management systems, has contributed significantly to blocked waterways. Climate change has made rainfall more unpredictable and intense, causing drainage systems to become overwhelmed within minutes of a downpour.
Here is where it gets interesting.
Lagos sits at the top of the national flood risk list due to its coastal geography, low-lying terrain, and high concentration of informal settlements located near waterways. Flash flooding is common in dense urban areas worldwide during periods of intense rainfall — and Lagos is one of the densest urban areas on the planet. What makes Lagos particularly extreme is not just the density of its people, but the density of its informal structures: buildings constructed without planning approval, streets never designed for the traffic they carry, markets that spill onto roads, and settlements that grew organically on land never zoned for habitation. As rapid population expansion continues, urban flooding will only worsen in cities like Lagos, where infrastructure development has consistently failed to match population growth.

A rising lagoon. Yes, you read that correctly. The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources has explained that high tidal movements often prevent drainage channels from discharging stormwater into the lagoon, resulting in temporary flash flooding. “Whenever there is high tidal movement, it may block the discharge points of drainage channels until the water level recedes. Such occurrences also cause backflow, resulting in flash flooding,” he stated.
Now here is where it gets truly alarming. Lagos is home to some of Africa’s finest and largest infrastructure — and yet, uncoordinated construction is increasingly disrupting the very drainage pathways that protect the city. Developers have filled in natural wetlands — nature’s own flood buffers — to build estates and roads, permanently eliminating the land’s capacity to absorb water. This is a serious cause for concern.
If structural, behavioural, and climate pressures continue to compound, the consequences will scale dramatically — and will absolutely cross the threshold of what qualifies as a natural disaster.
To be frank, we are already approaching that threshold. While flooding in Lagos is triggered by man-made negligence, the dangers it enables — sea level rise, increased storm intensity, and tidal surges — are forces beyond immediate human control. What amplifies their impact, however, is entirely within our hands: blocked drains, illegal construction, the destruction of wetlands, and poor waste disposal. These man-made failures strip the city of its natural resilience, so that when a genuine extreme weather event strikes — a storm surge, a prolonged rain spell, or a simultaneous combination of high tide and heavy downpour — Lagos is left with no buffer. According to Pulse Nigeria, “low-lying coastal communities face a double threat in 2026 as rising Atlantic sea levels block stormwater from emptying smoothly into the lagoon.”
In the medium term — within 10 to 20 years — without serious intervention, Lagos risks the kind of catastrophic flooding witnessed in Jakarta, Dhaka, and New Orleans: cities that also dismissed early warning signs as routine seasonal inconveniences. The difference is that Lagos has less time, because it is growing faster than all of them.
The question is no longer if a large-scale flood disaster will hit Lagos. The question is whether the city will be prepared when it does.
